It is one of the first high-altitude garrisons built in the Val di Fassa. It was 1897 when the DuÖAV alpine club in Leipzig built the refuge on the rocky outcrop of the Neigre Gates, at the foot of the Vajolet Towers.
Over the years there were numerous extensions to accommodate the many mountaineers, especially foreigners, who frequented the Catinaccio in the summer season. At the end of the Great War it was sold to sat (Società Alpinisti Tridentini) and for over twentyyears it has been managed by Fabio and Karin Bernard. The refuge, in classic white and blue colours, is open from June to October and can only be reached on foot, following the wide mule track that rises with wide hairpin bends from Gardeccia. The refuge is welcoming, able to handle important numbers, thanks to a young and well-knit staff. The kitchen? A real surprise! Typical dishes (do not forget the legendary "fortaes") and ad hoc menus for celiacs and vegans. From the refuge the view is priceless, especially at dawn and dusk, when the Enrosadira burns. And after dinner, everyone with their noses up looking at the sky.
