Two days in Val San Nicolò to celebrate Ladin culture and traditions with excellent gastronomy, touring concerts, folk dancing, theatrical performances and children's games
On Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August, Val San Nicolò hosts the Festa ta Mont, a two-day celebration of authentic traditions, steeped in customs, stories, and legends. Among the old mountain huts - known as "tieja" in Ladin - once used as seasonal dwellings and barns during the alpine pasturing period, you can immerse yourself in Ladin culture, explore its traditions, and savour delicious local dishes, all accompanied by cheerful folk music. Around twenty food stands, from "Saùch" to the Baita Ciampiè mountain hut, will bring the valley to life with a wide selection of local specialities: platters of cold cuts and cheeses, canederli (dumplings), polenta, goulash, spit-roasted porchetta, pork shank and ribs, sausages, sauerkraut, frankfurter sandwiches, pretzels and weisswurst, chicken with chips, "fortae", apple fritters, apple strudel, tarts, "Kaiserschmarrn", krapfen, yoghurt and malga whipped cream. And if you arrive early, you can even enjoy a traditional mountain breakfast!
After lunch, there’s plenty of culture and entertainment to enjoy: visit the photographic exhibitions, while children have fun on zip lines, trampolines, hay bales, and creative workshops.
The Festa ta Mont is a true celebration of the local community, made possible thanks to the dedication of over two hundred volunteers, who work together with enthusiasm to ensure the success of the event, creating an atmosphere of friendship and joy. Each year, the festival is centred around a theme. Last year’s event focused on mountain objects, featuring the "Meja" exhibition - a collection of illustrated panels with descriptions, testimonies from locals, and drawings by a local artist.
You can reach Val San Nicolò on foot or by shuttle bus (route "Vidor" > "Saùch"; runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; 3 € single ticket; 5 € return ticket). On Sunday, there will be a free excursion with mountain guide, meeting point at 9 a.m. at the "Buffaure" cabin lift valley station. Reservation compulsory by phone at +39 331 2989721 or at the Sport Check Point in Pozza.
